Treating Your Dog’s Upset Stomach
Article by Roger Cruz
Dogs are man’s best friends and that’s why they are among the most popular pets all over the world. If your dog is suffering from an upset stomach, then you should not panic. It is most probably a transient phase and you need not worry too much about it. Here are a few things that you can do to make your dog fit and healthy again without having to go to a vet.
The natural behavior of the wild dog is to binge eat and then starve for the next few days before hunting again. If your dog is having a stomach upset, it will be a great idea to starve him for twenty-four hours so that the digestive system can get back on track. Starving helps the stomach to cleanse itself and get rid of the germs causing the problem in the first place.
Always make sure that you dog has access to an unlimited supply of fresh and clean drinking water at all times. Keep the water container close to his resting place. If the dog’s stomach becomes normal within the next day, then you should start introducing him to steamed, low-protein food. Right after a stomach upset, the protein-digesting mechanism is not fully operational and it can lead to further complications. The food you make should not contain onions as that might cause diarrhea.
Mint has been known for a long time to be the best herb to calm the stomach. If you feel your dog’s upset stomach is taking a turn for the worse, you might want to try making mint tea, cool it and then feed it to your dog for a day. One to two cups for a small dog and up to four cups for a large dog is the best dose and will get your dog back on his feet.
However, if the above methods fail or you feel that your dog’s condition is deteriorating, don’t hesitate to take your pet to the vet at the earliest opportunity.
